Product name: Day trip from Rome to Sermoneta and Valvisciolo Abbey
Our driver Bruno will pick you up at your hotel in Rome at around 9 am with a comfortable air-conditioned minivan to take you to the first stop of our tour “Valvisciolo Abbey”. After about 90 minutes of travel we will reach the abbey where our guide will be waiting for us for a private tour of 45 minutes inside the Valvisciolo Abbey.
When you arrive in the Abbey of Valvisciolo you will be surprised by the grandeur and its beauty, being one of the greatest masterpieces of Cistercian architecture of the lower Lazio. We will look out from its terrace, where you can admire a fantastic panorama of the Agro Pontino to the sea.
Thus we will begin the guided tour to discover the abbey church with frescoes by Pomarancio; of the monastic environments that can be visited such as the Chapter room and the former Refectory. In addition, the Cloister full of interesting symbols and graffiti such as the famous SATOR palindrome which in the Valvisciolo variant represents a unicum, with the twenty-five letters arranged in five concentric circular rings, each of which is divided into five sectors. A medieval legend is also linked to this Abbey, it is said that in 1314, when the last Templar Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, was burned at the stake, the architraves of the churches that had a Templar presence broke. Even today, by carefully observing the architrave of the main portal of the abbey, a crack can be seen.
At the end of the guided tour, around 12:00 you will meet our driver Bruno again to go to a local farmhouse where you can have lunch with fantastic typical local products. After lunch we will go to visit Sermoneta.
We will take a guided tour of the city of art which is among the most beautiful villages in Lazio. It preserves its medieval experience almost intact and amazes for the beauty of its urban fabric characterized by alleys, tower houses, numerous churches with architectural and pictorial works of great interest. For this reason it was also chosen as a film set for about ninety films.
We will start from the door of the well which is the main entrance to enter the town. Passing through cobbled streets characterized by interesting views, you will arrive at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in cielo with its splendid Romanesque bell tower. Inside it, in addition to the architectural aspect, you can admire the wonderful Madonna of the Angels, which carries the town of Sermoneta, an altarpiece made by the famous painter Benozzo Gozzoli.
We will then go to visit the Church of San Giuseppe, protector of Sermoneta. Inside there are sixteenth-century frescoes by the famous painter, Girolamo Siciolante, known as Sermoneta, also named in Vasari’s Lives. Crossing the square you will come to the fifteenth-century Loggia dei Mercanti, the ancient municipal seat and the Porta Annibaldi, with the nearby Torre Valeria (which will be seen from the outside). Porta Annibaldi is the only remaining part of the ancient city walls. Passing through the Jewish Synagogue (which will be seen externally) you will arrive at the Belvedere where you can see a characteristic glimpse of the Caetani Castle above.
At around 6:00 pm we get back on board our minivan to go to Rome. After about 90-minute of travel you will arrive at your hotel in Rome and the tour will end.
